China-Italy rail freight transport: what is the current situation like?
As we know, the early months of 2022 saw the convergence of several elements that still affect international rail freight transport between Italy and China, such as the Russian-Ukrainian war – with more consequences for trains to or from Ukraine – or port blockages due to the Shanghai lockdown, which led to chain delays on the entire transport line.
The direct China-Europe train as a strategic element for trade
Despite these elements of instability, China’s commercial freight transport has seen steady growth in the early months of 2022.
In fact, the Chinese Ministry of Transport reports that as of Tuesday, 10 May, the volume of goods transported via the country’s railways and roads increased by 5.71% and 6.16% respectively compared to 18 April.
A recent element was the inauguration of a new goods train service to Europe that crosses the Caspian and Black Seas via combined rail-sea transport, thus avoiding Russia: the train will pass through Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and then reach Mannheim in Germany, covering a total distance of 11,300 km.
